The
Manly-Warringah Kayak Club / Pro Kayaks Coaching Programme is Managed by a cooordinated
and qualified group of coaches from the Manly- Warringah Kayak Club, administered from Pro
Kayaks at Narrabeen Lake. the structured coaching programme is designed to facilitate the
needs of all paddlers, from beginners through to the elite.
SQUAD STRUCTURE
LEVEL
ONE: Introduction
Requirements: Ability to swim 50m in paddling clothes
Aim: Competently paddle a TK1 ( with possibile progression to K1 ), for 2km continuously.
Programme: 4 weeks @ one session per week. A life jacket is required. Kayak, paddle and life jackets can be hired from the club. Participate in club races.
Outline: Introduction to basic paddling technique, balance, control and boat set up.
LEVEL TWO:
Requirements: Ability to swim 50m in paddling clothes.
Aim: Progress to K1 and complete 4km continuously. Provision for TK1 with time trial.
Programme: 6 weeks @ one/two session per week.
Outline: Improved/advanced paddling techniques, balance and control, turning, bracing, positioning the boat (draw stroke etc), boat trim, paddle selection.
LEVEL THREE:
Requirements: Time trial selection over 4km (4km < 28 minutes). Must have own paddle. Cometed in a minimum of two MWKC races in Level Two.
Aim: Preparation to progress to competition.
Programme: Two/Three session per week ongoing.
Outline: Advanced paddling and training techniques, body twist and leg drive, wash riding, race tactics and rules, technique improvment, introduction to other forms of paddling (outriggers, surfskis).
LEVEL FOUR: Sub-Elite Competitive
Requirements: Aiming to paddle in State Championships (Sprint or Marathon). Must have own boat. Complete 8km race or time trial in set time (4km < 24 minutes).
Aim: Perpare paddlers for competition at State Level.
Programme: Minimum 3 session per week.
Outline: Race preparation, race plans and techniques, race and competition training, technique refinement (including video analysis), Regatta and Championship information.
LEVEL FIVE: Elite Competitive
Requirements: Aiming to paddle in State and National Championships (Sprint or Marathon). (time Trial 4km < 20 minutes ).
Aim: Competition Perparation.
Programme: Minimum 3 session per week ongoing.
Outline: Race training- intensive training designed for competitors at elite levels. Two streams - sprint and marathon. Advanced training techniques / refinement, time trials, speed work, strength.
